Toodles 2009, Hello 2010!

Happy New Year!

For me, 2009 was a pretty good year. My partner and I married, something we’d talked about ever since same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada in 2005. I created a publishing company and am on the verge of releasing my first book. According to my doctor, who put me through all the paces, I’m in good health. And despite a couple of health scares in the family, my partner, family, and friends are all fairly healthy, and nobody seems to be grappling with any major problems. Overall, I’m rather content and enjoying life.

So what do I hope to accomplish in 2010?

In most areas of my life, I plan to keep doing what I’m doing. After all, it’s working. How’s that for a general statement that doesn’t commit me to anything? Okay, I do have a few specific goals in mind…

In early December, I was laid off. Fortunately I received a decent severance package, so I can afford to take a timeout and think about where I’d like to go next in my professional life. I’m mulling over my options. One goal is to figure out if I want to make any changes in that area, and if I do, how to accomplish them. Another, of course, is to be earning again by the time 2011 rolls around.

Yet another goal is to finish that darn fantasy story I’ve occasionally mentioned. It won’t be a short story; it will be novel length. I’m aiming to finish the first draft by the end of 2010 at the latest. That’s my drop dead date. I’d really like to finish it sooner.

What else? Well, I’m terrible when it comes to snail mail. I toss everything but bills onto a pile, planning to deal with it “later.” By the time “later” arrives, three to four months of mail is stacked up, threatening to topple over and bury one of the cats. I always tell myself that dealing with the mail on the day it arrives will take less than five minutes, so I’ll try that this year. But of all my goals for 2010, this is the one I’m least likely to achieve!

How about you? Any New Year’s resolutions or goals?

I wish you all the best for 2010!
