I started this blog back in August 2009. At the time, I was in the process of publishing Rymellan 1: Disobedience Means Death and felt that the information around the net about self-publishing in Canada was sparse. I’d also owned the sarahettritch.com domain for a couple of years and figured I should do something with it. Well, everyone seems to insist that writers should have a blog, so why not blog?

I installed WordPress and started to post about self-publishing and anything else that came to mind. I’ve touched on games, movies, cats, writing, and numerous other subjects. Most of the posts have been book reviews or of an informational nature; a few have been personal.

It was a bit of an experiment for me, and I’ve learned a few things about blogging and how I feel about it. I’m not as comfortable blogging about the personal as I am about the non-personal. I’ve come to believe that the blog lacks focus. And the subjects I most enjoy blogging about are (self) publishing and non-fiction books (reviewing them).

With that in mind, I’ve made changes at sarahettritch.com. The site now has a static front page with progress meters for the latest Rymellan story and the fantasy story. It also tells folks where else I hang out around the net. I moved the blog to a tab. I’ll still occasionally post to it, but the posts will mainly be about writing, non-fiction books, and any Rymellan Fiction news.

So what about publishing? I’ve moved all the publishing posts to a new blog, Self-Publishing Adventure. I’d owned the selfpublishingadventure.com domain for almost two years but hadn’t done anything with it. Now I have. The About page talks about how I ended up self-publishing. If you’ve been following my publishing related posts, check out Self-Publishing Adventure.

News about my book (and any forthcoming books), such as giveaways, new releases, new places to buy, etc., will be posted to Norn Publishing.

So to recap:

Publishing: See Self-Publishing Adventure

My book(s): See Norn Publishing

Writing, Rymellan Fiction, Non-fiction books: Stay right here.

This will work a lot better for me, and I hope it works better for you too.

Enjoy your weekend!

I find the condition about competitive pricing interesting. I’m wondering if Apple’s imminent announcement of its eBook reader and terms have anything to do with the timing of Amazon’s announcement.

Amazon has finally opened up Kindle publishing to everyone. See the press release.

Due to this new opportunity, I’ve opted out of Smashwords’ distribution to Amazon, which means I’ll make less money on each Kindle sale. Yes, if you publish to the Kindle through Smashwords, you get a bigger piece of the pie. But I’d prefer to have control of the Kindle listing, which I’ll now be able to properly link to the print book. And I’ll also be able to upload my file to Amazon. As I mentioned previously, Smashwords’ meatgrinder does an admirable job of converting to all the eBook formats, but it will never beat files that have been formatted by hand.

Amazon is currently in the process of registering me as an author. Once that’s done (which can take up to a week), I’ll upload the Kindle version of Rymellan 1: Disobedience Means Death.

Rymellan 1: Disobedience Means Death has made its way to Amazon and Barnes & Noble. You’ll actually get a slightly better deal at B&N right now.

The book’s information is going out in bits and bobs, so B&N has the cover; Amazon doesn’t. Amazon US says it’s in stock; Amazon UK says it’s not. This is normal—it takes a few weeks for all the information to make it to Lightning Source’s partners. The book hasn’t appeared in some bookstores yet, but it eventually will.

It’s actually pretty good that within a week of approving my first title at Lightning Source, the bookstores are already picking it up. It can sometimes take several weeks for a publisher’s first book.

Anyway, this gratuitous post is mainly here for those who search on the book’s title or for Rymellan information.
